Global Economist Michael Hudson offers a different analysis that I find more compelling: that the real objective of US imperialist's proxy war in Ukraine is to destabilize and de-industrialize EU economies so that Americans can exploit them selling them much, much more expensive American energy and manufactured goods - whenever they get around to creating the massive infrastructure necessary to transport and deliver the goods, a multi year project.
On this objective they are suceeding. The EU's major energy-intensive industries are being forced to shut down or drastically curtail operations in response to losing access to cheap Russian energy and other key commodities, and millions of workers are being idled. They are also being ravaged by rampant inflation, a direct blowback effect of self-destructive sanctions which are hurting Western vasal states FAR MORE than Russia - all at the behest of and to the advantage of the exploitive US.
EU citizens have caught on and are now beginning to rise up in revolt in very large numbers against their US -puppet "leaders" as they face a very long winter of freezing in homes they can no longer afford to heat and can't buy food at a reasonable price either!
Russia is the natural trading partner for EU nations, NOT the half a world away United States, but the US has lost exploitive control over the gGobal South and now has only the EU (and its own people) left to exploit, so it must prevent Russia and China surpassing it as the supplier of natural choice to the European continent.
